Creativity has always been more than just putting colors, images, shapes, and words together for Katlego Mokhonyane, a Graphic Designer from Thaba Nchu in the Free State.
He describes creativity as a way of communicating ideas, expressing emotions, and telling stories that sometimes cannot be conveyed through ordinary conversation.
Katlego is passionate about using creativity to bring ideas to life. His journey has been one of learning, experimenting, making mistakes, improving, and discovering new ways to express himself through visual art and design.
For Katlego, graphic design is not simply about making something look attractive. It involves understanding an idea, understanding the audience, and then transforming that idea into something meaningful, memorable, and powerful.
“My creative journey is still developing, and I believe one of the most exciting things about being an artist is that you are never truly finished learning. Every project teaches you something new. Every challenge pushes you to think differently. Every design gives you another opportunity to improve,” he explains.
Katlego adds that his name is important to him because it represents more than just an identity. It embodies the person behind the ideas, creativity, and vision. Every piece of work he creates carries a part of who he is because creative work is personal. Even when designing for someone else, he invests his thoughts, effort, and imagination into it.
Katlego wants his ambition to be associated with creativity, originality, determination, and the ability to turn ideas into something visual and understandable.
“I also want my journey to show that you do not necessarily need to come from a famous background or have everything figured out from the beginning to become a creative person. Sometimes you simply have to start with what you have, believe in what you are doing, keep learning, and refuse to stop.”
His graphic design journey has been ongoing, evolving over several years rather than starting and suddenly becoming complete on one specific day. He has dedicated significant time to learning through practice, experimenting with ideas, and discovering the power of visual communication.
He considers himself a lifelong learner and doesn’t believe that being a graphic designer means reaching a point of knowing everything. As a creative person, he understands the need to change and grow alongside the ever-evolving field.
“I have always been fascinated by how one image can communicate something instantly. A strong visual can capture attention, spark curiosity, evoke emotions, prompt questions, and create lasting memories,” he emphasizes.
